Medications can comfort your pet when allergies plague him, but other methods also help; for example, a change in his daily routine or his environment can positively affect his overall quality of life. Managing your pet’s allergies is key to his comfort, but it can be a challenge. Follow our tips and learn how to provide your pet comfort and relief. 

Schedule time for a veterinary visit

If you suspect your pet has allergies but aren’t sure what is triggering them, we recommend scheduling an appointment with our team. A number of substances can cause allergic reactions in pets, but your pet may be exhibiting signs of another condition, and only your veterinarian will be able to determine the correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Once your veterinarian has confirmed that your pet has allergies, our team will create an individualized treatment plan based on your pet’s needs that may include pharmaceuticals, flea and tick prevention, shampoos, hyposensitization therapy and traditional Chinese veterinary medicine (TCVM).  

Remove or reduce your pet’s allergen exposure

If outdoor allergens, such as pollen or grasses, are triggering your pet’s allergic reaction, reduce his allergen exposure by limiting his time outside. You can also use an air purifier to help reduce the allergens inside your home, and groom your pet regularly to reduce the residual allergen on his coat.

If your pet has food allergies, we can help to pinpoint the ingredient causing the reactions and recommend a special diet that doesn’t include the allergen. 

Establish a consistent grooming routine

A consistent grooming routine is beneficial for every pet, but it is essential for pets with allergies. Bathing him with soap-free shampoos is best for his skin and coat. Refrain from using baby shampoo, and do not overbath your pet, because these can both strip away the natural oils in your pet’s coat, causing his skin to dry out and become itchy. Your veterinarian may prescribe a medicated shampoo for your pet if he has a skin infection. 

Ear infections may signal allergies in some pets. Regular ear cleanings (i.e., one or twice per month, depending on your pet’s needs) will reduce the chance of ear infections developing, so make your pet comfortable with his ears being cleaned. Most pets don’t enjoy ear cleanings, so you will need to be patient. If an ear infection is present, your veterinarian may recommend a more frequent cleaning schedule. Invest in flea- and tick-preventive medication

Pets who struggle with skin issues don’t need the additional hassle of biting insects, like fleas and ticks. Investing in a regular flea- and tick-prevention regime will protect your pet from developing secondary skin infections and provide relief from biting insects. Flea and tick preventives are available in oral and topical forms, as well as flea collars. Some products are longer-lasting, while others contain flavor additives that may cause an allergic reaction. Research the products available, ensuring you select a high quality, veterinary-recommended product. Over-the-counter products can cause harmful side effects or be ineffective.
